Nanjing: Top 5 attractions
An ancient defence city that converted into today’s historical town by the presence of dynasties in it through the complete Chinese history. The city is attractive for the still standing strong walls that surround it and the bitter parts of history that accompany them. The place was of significance in opium war, in the progress of some of the leading dynasties of China and the Chinese fight back from Japanese dominance. Apart from history there are other factors that make this place interesting the Buddhist history, gardens and the natural abundance of China, rivers and natural resources. If all these are not satisfying enough then it is for them that the city is modernising very rapidly so that there are coming up most of the modern luxuries that make this place a confluence of cultures and histories with passing time.
Confucius Temple, a haven of wisdom
Situated on the bank of Qin Huai River this temple on the great Chinese philosopher has always been the source of wisdom to the visitors and still remains a standing example of protest to the oppressive forces on China. The temple has been destroyed several times and rebuilt to the present day structure against many invaders who wanted to dent the Chinese spirit of living. The last in the list has been the Japanese and since then the temple has been completely overhauled. The latest architecture is leveraged on the ancient pride of China, the Qing and the Ming dynasties.
Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum
This is an ideal place for one’s last abode. A tomb at the foothills of Purple mountain where lies the first emperor of the revered Ming dynasty emperor Chengzu and his beloved wife Queen Ma. Separated into two parts this mausoleum has one sacred area and the other main section. The entrance has archway for dismounting of horses and other animals so that all go from here on foot as a sign of respect to the deceased. In the central sacred passage there are many stone animals guarding the tomb of the dead and protecting the holiness of the place. There are deeper meanings implied through the animals of good omen.
The defence, Nanjing city wall
Most of the Chinese cities were built with city walls in their early days to protect against enemy invasion. Most of the city walls are now in ruins but some of them have been maintained to their grandeur, this wall is one of them. The dimensions are gigantic and most of it is erect. There were four sections in the wall and only one of them stands today. In a diamond shape this wall in the inner most one and looking at it the enormity of the project can be understood in the time when there was no solid technology to do this.
Nanjing museum, preserving history
Every museum tells about the history of the land. This is also not different; a long history of China is found in this museum. There are some of the most important belongings from the important dynasties of China and they are a running commentary on history itself. The museum building is a historical document on the architectural history of China. There are three parts the museum is divided into including the human civilisation, Chinese history and Jiangsu archaeological achievements. Some of the sections have also been separated into the cultural development of human race.
Qin Huai river
The river takes all drainage but never lose the beauty of it. The flow of the river helps to clean the water in it and that is really a boon. The beauty on the bank of the river is breathtaking and that is praised world over. Most of the places of interest in the city is on the bank of the inner river and a cruise on it can be better way to get these places visited.
