This is the city where the emperors lived
The city of Xian in China is famous internationally mainly for the terracotta mausoleum of about 220 BC. This is a worldwide tourist attraction due to enormous statues of burnt clay arranged in long ditches of the royal guards. There are very few tourists in China who go without visiting this mausoleum. Xian is not only about the statues but also has a rich history of dynasties that have come and settled here for ruling the provinces around this. In the international trade also this place holds good as this was an important terminus in the eastern part of the silk route. The history is voluminous but that has not burdened this place as Xian even today has modified all those glorified history and mixed modernity with it to emerge as a cultural, intellectual and also a business trade centre of significance. There are many tourist places in and around the city which are prominent from the point of religion as well as history. Even without them also there are too many tourist attractions in this place of great food, good night life as well as decent places to spend the night.
A reach cuisine, made more precious by imperial experience
The typical cuisine of this place is Shaanxi cuisine which is very much an ethnic style that has been enriched by the cooking specialities of different dynasties. This cuisine covers the tastes of whole China due to central location of the provinces which started these special dishes and have complex layers of tastes put into it. There is no authentic place named for this but any local will be the best person to guide. Xian also has the Moslem street which can be the snacks street also. This is the place for all the snacks varieties available in the city and they are all different from each other. Cantonese food is one of the more prominent social foods in this city. To get decent and authentic Cantonese food Yue Zhen Xuan, Prince Restaurant, Sheng Hao Xuan can be tried.
Shopping in Xian: Bell and Drum tower and Xiaozhai Market
Every tourist wants to bring back some memento from the places they visit as a souvenir and there can be many types of it. The places to buy a product of choice in Xian are the Bell and Drum tower shopping complex which is thronged by many types of traders and buyers. This is an attraction itself. The other place is Xiaozhai, the cheap market which is ideal for bargaining and for that only is a favourite haunt for young people. At most of the places of tourist attraction there are good markets for ethnic handicrafts but it is an issue of caution that all that should be verified and bargained for as these are the places of high price. The Gaoxin business area is the place for high end products and is full of malls and electronic goods shops.
Xian Transportation System: airflights, bus, trains, taxis
Xian's Airport (Xianyang International Airport, code XIY) is located about 48 km north of the city. This airport is well connected with 68 Chinese cities, but also to international destinations in Asia (Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand) and the rest of the world (particularly in Europe, America and Canada). Obviously air links with Beijing and Shanghai are particularly frequent. Some tourists choose to travel by train the distance (about 910 km) from Xian to Beijing. The trip is long (about 12-13 hours) but can be quite comfortable if you start at the night (in the sleeping car) and arriving to Xian in the morning. To move around the city there are many buses at a good price (1-3 yuan), but many foreigners prefer to take taxis (10-15 yuan). For transfers between the airport and the city the bus is more convenient (25 yuan).
Xian by night, Dance Show of Tang Dynasty and Imperial Banquets
Even the nights of Xian are able to interest and surprise the visitors. In recent years, they are having rising success the Xian Night Tours, that allow you to learn new fascinating sides of Xian. The guides pick you at the hotel and bring you back to the hotel at the end of the evening. Among the most famous things that you can see in the night of Xian there are the colorful play of light at Huaqing Hot Spring (starts at 20.30), the illuminated water fountains at the Big Goose Pagoda (which change shape and color by the music), the extraordinary Music and Dance Show of Tang Dynasty (more than 100 artists, dancers and musicians, recreate the atmosphere and special performances in vogue about 1300 years ago), the Lotus Garden Datang Banket (where you can enjoy a sumptuous feast as at the time of the emperor). 2012-01-27
