    Shanwei: brief description for tourists who wish to visit Shanwei
    Located in the southeast coast of Guangdong Province, Shanwei City is east to Jieyang City, bordering with Huilai County; west to Huizhou City, bordering with Huidong County; north to Heyuan City, bordering with Zijin County; and south to the South China Sea. The total area is 5271km². Within the City area, there are 1 City District, 2 counties (Haifeng and Luhe), one city (Lufeng) and two zones (Honghaiwan Bay Economic Development Test Zone and Overseas Chinese Management Zone), with a total population of over 3.3 million people. Shanwei City has a long history. According to the relic research over the southeast coast, dating back to the Neolithic Age 6,000 years ago, there were ancestors fishing, hunting and planting here. They lived and multiplied here. Shanwei is in the south territory of Yangzhou, which is one of nine prefectures, namely, Jiuzhou mentioned in Yu Gong; it is known as Fanfu land in Zhou Li • Xia Guan • Zhi Fang; it is a part of Nanyue during the Spring and Autumn Period, and is incorporated into Chu and is referred as Baiyue during the Warring States Period; From the Qin Dynasty to the beginning of the Han Dynasty, it is a part of Boluo County of Nanhai Commandery. In the sixth year (111 BC) of the Yuanding period in the Han Dynasty, the Han conquered Nanyue and established Haifeng County. It was the first county in Shanwei region, and till now it has a history of 2110 years. At that time, Haifeng County belonged to Dongguan Commandery, controlling Shanwei City and parts of Huilai, Puning and Jiexi. In the eleventh year (Year 591)of Emperor Sui Wendi, Dongguan Commandery and Lianghua Commandery were set up as Xunzhou, and Haifeng County was changed to be part of Xunzhou; in the fifth year (622)of Emperor Gaozu in the Tang Dynasty, Anlu County was established in the east of Haifeng County, and Anlu County was located in Da'antun (now is part of Da'an Town, Lufeng City), controlling Lufeng City, Luhe County and Huilai, Puning and Jiexi. To the first year (627) of Emperor Zhen Guan in the Tang Dynasty, Anlu County was abandoned and Haifeng County was recovered which was still under the control of Xunzhou. During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period, Xunzhou changed its name to Zhenzhou, and then Shanwei became part of Zhenzhou. In the fourth year (971)of Emperor Kaibao in the Song Dynasty, Zhenzhou in Guangnan East Road was set up, and in the fifth year (1021) of Tianxi, to avoid the name of Prince Zhao Zhen (later Ren Zong) , Zhenzhou was replaced with Huizhou when Haifeng, Boluo, Heyuan , Guishan (today Huidong) were parts of Guangnan East Road Huizhou. Haifeng County had jurisdiction over Xingxian, Jinxi, Yang'an, Shitang, Shifan, Jikang, Fangkuo and Longxi. In the Yuan Dynasty, Shanwei area was a part of Guangzhoudao Huizhoulu in executive secretariat of Jiangxi; in the Ming Dynasty, it belonged to Huizhou government of administrative commissioner's office in Guangdong; In the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to Huizhou, Guangdong Province; in the ninth year (1731) of Emperor Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty, Shifan , Fangkuo and Jikang in the east of Haifeng County belonged to Lufeng County. The County was in Donghai (today Donghai Town, Lufeng City). Haifeng and Lufeng counties belonged to the Huizhou government. In the Early Republic, they were under the control of Guangdong Province. In the 19th year (1930) of the Republic, they were under the control of Guangdong Provincial Chief Inspecting Area 4. After the founding of the PRC, Haifeng and Lufeng are under the jurisdiction of the Dongjiang Commissioner' office; it transferred to Yuedong Commissioner's office in 1953; in 1957 it was under the control of Huiyang Commissioner's office; in December 1958, it was classified into the Shantou Commissioner's office; in September 1983, its ownership was the Huiyang Commissioner's office. In January 1988, upon the approval of the State Council, Shanwei was set up as a city. Shanwei is rich in natural resources, with mountains, waters and plains. Since ancient times it has been said to have abundant materials in "South China Sea". First, it has a pleasant climate. Shanwei is of a southern subtropical monsoon and maritime climate. It is not cold in winter, and not hot in summer, with plentiful sunshine. The hot rainy season is with abundant rainfall. The average annual temperature is between 22.9℃ ─ 23℃. Second, it is rich in water resources. There are 15 rivers with a rainwater collection area of over 100km² within the city including Luohe River, Luoxi River, Chishihe River, Huangjiang River and Dayehe River, of which Luohe River, Wukanhe River, Aojiang River, Huangjiang River and Chishihe River flow directly into the sea. Luohe River and Huangjiang River are the two major rivers in Shanwei City. Third, coastal resources top the first in the eastern area of Guangdong. The length of the coastline is 455.02km, accounting for 11.06% of the length of the province's coastline. There are 93 islands, 12 sea ports and three lakes within its jurisdiction, and the ocean land area within the 200m isobath along the coast line under the jurisdiction of the city is 23,800 km ², accounting for 14% of the ocean land area in the province. Shanwei Port is a natural deep water harbor, and is the national first class coastal port. New Shanwei port which is being planned for the construction will have 8-10 100,000-ton berths, boasting superior resources for the development of port industry and logistics industry. Fourth, the use of space of land resources is great. Shanwei City has mountain terrains in the north. There are 23 mountains with an elevation of above 1000 km. The highest peak is Lotus Mountain with an elevation of 1337.3 meters, located in the northwest of Haifeng County; it is hilly and mountainous in the central regions; there are mountains and plains in the southern coastal areas; the city's total land area is 7.3529 million mu, with an area of 5.9547 million mu for agricultural land, 0.6848 million mu for construction land, and 0.7133 million mu for unused land. It is the city with most land in the east of Guangdong. There are 10 categories of soil in 40 classes and more than 70 types. The mountainous and hilly area is of a large proportion, accounting for 43.7% of the total area; the city has 3.12 million mu of woodland, with a forest coverage of 49.3%. Fifth, it is extremely rich in aquatic resources. There are marine water, freshwater, and sea freshwater. There are 14 aquatic species of marine economy in 107 classes of 173 kinds. Freshwater fish have seven species of 13 families in 41 types. Sea freshwater fish are grouper, seahorse, shrimp, lobster, mud crab and abalone. Sixth, it has unique tourism resources. Shanwei is "the most popular leisure city", having great prospects in the development of tourism resources. It has both historic cultural landscapes and beautiful natural tourism resources for rich cultural heritage, which constitute unique "colored resources" in Shanwei, which is "red, blue, green, ancient and special". "Red resources": Shanwei is one of thirteen old revolutionary base areas in the country. Haifeng County is the birthplace of the first county-level Soviet regime. There is Red Palace Red Square for the establishment of China's first county-level Soviet regime, which is the patriotism education base; the former residence of Comrade Peng Pai; the former Red Fourth Army division headquarter sites and the Red Army tombs. In Lufeng there are a revolutionary site in Yongsan, the former site of the total farmers' associations, and the monument of Comrade Zhou Enlai crossing Hong Kong, and Red Second Army reorganization sites in Luhe. "Blue resources": up to 455 km of coastline, with clean and pleasant beaches, having a reputation of "100 Islands, ten beaches and nine bays". There is a tourist area of Honghai Bay, one of the province's top ten most fascinating tourist attractions of the coastal areas and is well known as "unicorn horn in the east of Guangdong" and "First Bay in the Southern Sky", there is Jinxiangtan tourist area known as the "Gold Coast for Tourism in Guangdong," there is Haili International Golf Club, the only international standard sand golf course in China, and there is Pingqinghu tourist area, currently the largest existing coastal lagoon in mainland China. "Green resources": Shanwei has air of high purity, smog and other harmful weather is rare. The air quality ranks top three for a long time in the province. The forest coverage of Luhe County is up to 68%, with 40,000 mu castanopsis hystrix forest and 100,000 mu plum forests. It is the provincial forestry ecological county, and the hometown of Chinese greenplum. Haifeng has Lianhua Mountain, Lian'an wetlands, Dahu Bird Island, Gonping Bird Island, and is the hometown of water birds in China. "Ancient resources": there is Jieshi Xuanwu Mountain Tourist Area which is the famous temple of Guangdong, the center of the Buddhist faith for people speaking Southern Fujian language, the national heritage conservation unit and the national AAAA level scenic spot. There is Fengshan Mazu tourist area, a representation of the City Park for the city of Shanwei, and the Mazu Cultural Communication Center of the eastern regions of Guangdong. There is Dingguang Temple in Qingyun Mountain and Institute of nuns with the largest scale and the largest number of participants in China, as well as Jiming Temple Yunlian Temple and Golden Bamboo Temple in Lianhua Mountain. "Featured Resources": Shanwei has unique tourism resources, suitable to carry out beach sports, water sports, yacht tourism and health spa. Zhelang Peninsula in Honghai Bay is the sub-division area for the 16th Asian Games, and a sea sports base in Guangdong. There are dozens of brackish hot springs to be developed. The excellent geographical environment allows the food in Shanwei to have ecological, organic, wild, safe and green features. Lian'an organic rice, Meilong spinach, Bomei radish, Huangqiang lily flowers, and fresh seafood are the original eco-food, which is also a valuable resource for tourism in Shanwei. Seventh, it has convenient transportation. Shanwei is 81 nautical miles away from Hong Kong, 200 nautical miles from Kaoxiong Taiwan, and 12 nautical miles from the Pacific international Waterways at sea. At land, it is 240 kilometers away from Guangzhou, 150 km away from Shenzhen, and 160 km away from Shantou. Shenzhen-Shantou Highway runs through the whole city, and is close to the coastline. Xiamen-Shenzhen Railway opened in 2011 and it takes just 40 minutes to reach Shenzhen. Guangzhou to Shanwei high speed railway only takes 50 minutes to reach Guangzhou. The constructions of Tianjin-Shanwei Highway, Yulin-Zhangzhou Fujian Highway and Longchuan-Shanwei Line of Beijing-Kowloon Railway successively start. In the future a traffic pattern of "three railways, three highways and one port" will be formed for a developed water and land transportation. As the inner ring of the Pearl River Delta and a coastal city, Shanwei is destined to play an important role in the new pattern of "shops in front and factories behind" in the reform for Guangdong. Shanwei is rich in cultural heritage, and is the converging place for ChaoShan culture, South Fujian culture, Cantonese culture and Hakka culture. The cultural diversity and compatibility endows it with the name of the "hometown of Chinese folk culture and art". It is the hometown of historical celebrities including Peng Pai, Ma Sicong and Xie Fei. There are seven national and 13 provincial-level intangible cultural heritage items, including Baizi drama, Xiqin drama, and orthographic drama which are national rare operas. Lufeng Rolling Dragon, Shadow Play, Yingge Dance, Shanwei Fisherman's Song, Haifeng Kirin Dance, Coin Drum Dance and Hetian High Landscape with local characteristics are incorporated into tourism, making Shanwei more attractive. In recent years, the municipal committee and government attach great importance to the development of tourism, targeting the city of Shanwei to be a modern coastal city with developed industry, tourism and marine industry. Shanwei is making great efforts to develop "three major economic zones" including the characteristic tourism industry economic zone, committed to creating Shanwei as the east garden for Pearl River Delta tourism and leisure.
